About
The case for honest property intelligence.
Outpost was built because the gap between what wealthy buyers pay private counsel for, and what the rest of us get from a Saturday-morning agent visit, is absurd. We’re closing it.
Why we built it
Buying property abroad is the largest financial decision most people will ever make outside their home country — and it is run, almost everywhere, on agents’ goodwill and Google translations. The selling agent introduces the lawyer, the lawyer hands you forty pages in a language you don’t read, and three signatures later you own a flat that turns out to have unlicensed extensions, an expired tourist-rental permit, or — in Spain — an empty-property okupa risk nobody mentioned.
Outpost exists to compress the gap between “I’m a foreign buyer with no local contacts” and “I’m treated like a private-counsel client”. We do this with software, not staff.
What we believe
- Independence matters. We don’t take referral fees or kickbacks from selling agents, developers, lenders, or solicitors. When we connect you to a vetted independent professional, you pay them — never them paying us.
- Specifics beat platitudes. “Always consult a local lawyer” is true but useless. We name PEUAT, AL containment, DPE class G, EWS1, leasehold tail risk — so you know exactly what to ask.
- Free public data should be free for buyers too. HM Land Registry, DVF, INE, Catastro are public registers paid for by taxpayers. We make them digestible so you don’t have to learn SPARQL on a Sunday.
- Honest AI labelling. Where we use AI estimates instead of registry data — chiefly Portugal and Spain — we say so on the report.
- Pay once, not forever. Most people buy one or two properties abroad in a lifetime. Charging a recurring subscription for a one-off life event isn’t customer-friendly. So we don’t.
Honest about limits. Outpost is an analytical tool. It is not a substitute for a chartered surveyor, a local solicitor, or a tax adviser. We tell you what to ask. The professionals you engage tell you the answer.
How we work
Outpost runs on three engines: a transaction-data pipeline (DVF for France, HM Land Registry for the UK; for Portugal and Spain we currently use clearly-labelled AI estimates), a tax and cost calculator maintained by hand against published 2025-2026 rates, and a Local Intelligence layer that names region-specific laws and risks. The narrative is written by Gemini, but every fact-bearing field is constrained to data we can cite. Read the full methodology →
Who is behind it
Outpost is built by a small, independent team. We’ve worked across data engineering, machine learning, real-estate analytics and consumer product — and we’ve bought, attempted to buy, and walked away from properties across the supported countries. The product is the tool we wish had existed when we did.
We are not VC-funded. We don’t need to grow at the expense of trust. If you have feedback, write to hello@outpost.tools — every email is read by one of us.
